THE BUDDHIST WAY OF LIFE
(For Grade 9 Students) Based on the Government Curriculum (New Syllabus)
Education plays important role within Buddhist traditions. The main aim of Buddhist teaching is to educate the individual and develop the moral attitude towards a better tomorrow. For that, we need to have a wisely arranged proper system of interrelated child education which is purposefully relevant to contemporary global knowledge and steadfast, staunch Buddhist values.
According to the teaching of the Buddha, if one is to be disciplined, primarily he or she should have a total devotion and faith in Dhamma. With the improvement of above mental factor, one is expected to have developed and disciplined his or her physical and verbal institutions. (sabba pāpassa akaranam) Likewise, mental distractions, created by some samsaric reasons or some mundane conflicts, those arisen from own family and outer society should be wisely overcome in order to develop the dignified mental factor further.
(kusalassa upasampadā) Hence, the Buddhist philosophy thoroughly corroborates this spiritual awakening of person and helps him or her to become a fully conscious being. Afterwards, he or she himself or herself must pay further attention to develop one's own wisdom accordingly, it is prescribed. (sacittha pariyodapanam).
Thus, this is the ideal breeding ground for Sri Lankan children's spiritual development. Specially, for the students who are having their education in English medium in present day school the education, rendered by government or private sector international schools. No need to say that, it is a tough task to teach those students, Buddhism or relevant teachings in Sinhala medium. Therefore, veteran educators like Mr. Jinasena has been able to do miracles through her masterly dedication and well prepared series of "The Buddhist Way of Life" text books, I assume. She has done it in great style and her well accomplished pedagogical qualifications and creative compiling methods together have to be dearly commended. I suppose, by all the Buddhist community in the country and the reverend Buddhist Bhikkhus. I whole heartedly wish you every success in your meritorious endeavors. May Triple Gem bless you.
